NES Classic – Looking for Some Cheats?

tips-n-tricks-banner

You probably get your cheat codes from a site you like such as GameFAQs , and so do I. But I got annoyed of going searching for the same games from the 30 game collection on the NES Classic over and over again on there.
So I copied them all from GameFAQs and put them in one large PDF file that you can get here.

And here they all are right here…

Donkey Kong

Secrets

        • Gain multiple points faster

Gain multiple points faster
Normally you would gain 100 points each time you jump over a barrel. But try jumpin over a barrel while the following 2 conditions apply:
– You are standin on the top of the MIDDLE ladder on the THIRD floor (first level)
– The barrel must roll down the ladder you are on as you jump over it

If the conditions apply (as in, you jump over a barrel without movin back or forth, and it just rolls down the ladder below you), then you will hear the scorin points sound effect played multiple times really fast, and you will gain several hundred points.

Glitches

        • Helicopter glitch

When playing the stage that you are inside the helicopter, there is a way to make the door close as soon as it opens. After it opens, just pause the game and leave it paused for about 10 or so seconds, and then unpause the game. After unpausing the game, the door should close, saving you the hassle of worrying about getting sucked out, and you can just concentrate on the enemies.

        • Tomb of Erdrick/Link

In Elfland, just beside the White Mage shop, there are three tombstones. Two of them are ordinary tombstones, but the one on the left is different. It is the tomb of Erdrick. Erdrick is a character from Dragon Warrior, another very popular game series produced by Enix. In the Japanese version of FF1 (and in PSX’s Final Fantasy Origins), the tomb says ”Here lies Link” instead. Link, of course, is the hero of the Legend of Zelda series.

Galaga: Demons of Death

Secrets

        • Double-Fire Ship (or 1,000 Points)

This trick concerns the Galaga enemies at the top of the screen – they normally only arrive in quantities or four and are the only enemies able to take two hits, switching to blue after the first. One of their attacks – which won’t occur if too few (2~5) enemies are left – is to use a tractor beam to get your ship. This initially causes a loss of life, implying this is bad. Actually, this is good – if you shoot down the Galaga that took your ship while it is diving for another attack, then you will be able to recapture that ship and fire two missiles at once, and take two hits before another loss of life. (If you shoot the ship, it gives you a bonus 1,000 points instead. You can shoot the ship at any time. Just note that if you hit the Galaga while it’s not actively moving, then the ship will attack you!)

If the glitch worked correctly, when it shows what item you have, it should display “00” for item usage and you can use the ability an additional 266 times. If it failed, then you either did it too early or hit the switch before you used the ability.

Jump right under a floor. Right when you’re about to hit the bottom of the floor, pause the game by pressing Start. Then press Start again to unpause it. If you timed it correctly, you will jump right through the floor and end up on top of it!

Note: This glitch requires good timing to pause the game, so this will not always work.

Glitches

        • Airman-Wily stage 2 warp glitch

During the boss fight with Airman, use Item 1 so that the platform is created on the far left side. Jump on the platform, and you’ll notice that it already becomes glitchy by not moving the Air attacks created by Airman. If you’re in the correct position on the platform, as you go past the enterance to this room, it will act as though you just entered a door, and push you through the right hand side of the room. For some reason, this ends up being Stage 2 of Dr Wily’s fortress, except that now all backgrounds/platforms are made up out of the backgrounds/platform textures of Airman’s stage. IE they will be made up from clouds/skies.

        • Warp to Wily Stage 1 from HeatMan’s Stage

This glitch occurs while fighting HeatMan, and you need to have Bubble Lead weapon (to make it easier). In one of HeatMan’s attacks, he tosses three small flames at you. When he does this, use the Bubble Lead twice so that two bubbles are on the screen along with HeatMan’s fire sparks. Before the Bubble Lead hits HeatMan, jump towards the gate you entered the room in and as you touch the gate, get hit by one of HeatMan’s flames. If done correctly, the gate will open and and transport you to the beginning Wily Stage 1.

Wily Stage 1 will not have its normal color scheme, but it will have the color scheme and tileset of HeatMan’s stage instead. Once you manage to get here, you will be mysteriously hit by something invisible until you die. However, you will start at the beginning of this stage, and you will no longer get hit.

BOMBS_ MISSLE
SCREW_ ATACK_

(Yes it’s in all caps)

You start with 111 missles, the Ice Beam, Bombs, and 4 energy tanks.

You start with the ball, but can go fetch another one.

You don’t have the Long Jump boots, but they aren’t around to pick up.

The missle door to the long beam is open, but you haven’t collected it yet.

Kraid and Ridley’s statues have been activated(as well as the door to them opened), and you can get into Tourian. However, they aren’t dead yet and can still be killed if it tickles your fancy.

Mother Brain can also fail to show up at all, however, if she is there you can scroll back and forth to make chunks of her sprites dissapear until the way is cleared. The text about getting the heck out will be there, but will be brown in the space that is usually occupied by MB. At any rate, you’ll be able to leave at your convenience, without a timer. All but a couple Zebetites will have flown the coop, too.

Since you don’t have the LJ boots available to you, you can’t get the Varia.

Other misc. missle doors throughout the planet will be opened.

Glitches

        • Glitch: Climb up Walls

On most levels with the doors you shoot to cause them to open you can use a door to climb up many many walls/levels above. Simply shoot the door and stand with the front 1/2 of Samus wedged where the door will reform. After you are partially ”sealed” by the door just quickly tap up and down on the control pad. You will slowly climb up the wall. It is possible to get stuck while using this trick.

        • Morph Ball Double Jump

Turn into the Morph Ball, and slide off a platform or any other surface that allows Samus to stand in the air as Morph Ball. While in mid-air, press UP, and Samus will now be standing on her feet without any ground below her (She will be doing this still in mid-air), then quicly press ”A” to perform an jump from the standing position you were placed. This trick will only work as long as Samus’s sprite is stationary, this means that if you hit the D-Pad from you standing position, you will not be able to Morph Ball Double Jump.

        • Skip Kraid and Ridley

You have to have gone far enough to get the Ice beam. Now go to the room where the bridge needs to be formed and there’s the statues of Ridley and Kraid. Before you enter that room, have the winged enemy chase you and hit you as you are going through the door.

If done correctly, the enemy follows you into the next room. Simply freeze him and use him as a stepping stone to get across the gap – without beating Ridley or Kraid. You can theoretically beat the game in under 20 minutes by using this glitch.

Glitches

        • Mid-air sword glitch

Normally, you can only slash once or twice slowly with your sword during a jump. With this glitch, you can rapidly swing your sword multiple times in mid-air. To perform the glitch, jump in the air, hold ‘down’ on the d-pad while in the air, then swing your sword with ‘B’. While still in the air, release the down button, then immediately hold the down button once more and attack again. You will swing your sword more rapidly than normal. You can repeat the process until you land. With enough practice, you can swing your sword up to 4 times in the air. This will only work while you’re in the air. The glitch works very well with slow-moving or stationary bosses, allowing you to get in a few extra hits.

Secrets

        • Beat Piston Honda with one punch

In the second fight against Piston Honda it is possible to win the bout by scoring only one punch. Dodge his punches but don’t retaliate. Then when he goes into his Piston Punch routine, hit him in the stomach like in the first fight. As in the first bout, if you time it right he’ll be down. Unlike the first fight however, he will be too unsteady to keep his feet. I’ve even seen him be unable to get up. Just keep in mind that the charging time for his Piston Punch routine is a lot shorter so you really have to time it just right or you’ll just end up taking major damage.

Then, position Mario on the edge of the pipe, with one foot hanging off the edge. Duck, then jump backwards as far right as possible. If done just right, Mario will slide through the pipe and the bricks. Walk over to the warp zone area and enter the middle pipe. This pipe will take you to world 5, level 1. The same area can be acessed from a pipe in the same place in 4-2. However, this is meant to be a warp zone to 5-1, whereas the 1-2 warp to 5-1 is a glitch. After completing the jump trick in level 1-2, you can also go down either of the other two pipes, both of which will take you to Minus World -1.

        • Extra jump after collecting a power up in mid-air

This only works with mushrooms and fire flowers. Reveal a power up from under any block which contains one. Now jump onto the power up and release the A button. As Mario is transitioning to the next power up, hold down the A button, and Mario will jump in mid-air!

        • Negative World

Go to World 1-2. At the pipe that leads to the flag, break two blocks so there’s one at the end touching the pipe. Now duck and jump backward toward the brick (don’t break it!). You should go through the wall and pipe into a warp zone. Jump down the first pipe you see and you will be in the Negative World (-1)!

        • Shoot fireballs as small Mario

Go to either 1-4, 2-4,3-4, etc. and get to Bowser. Make sure you are Big Mario and try to jump over Bowser or run under him. Stand near the Axe and Bowser will start to walk towards you. As he gets near you, jump high, and touch Bowser and the Axe at the same time. If you do it correctly, you will hear the sound as if you were to shrink, but you will just flash and stay big. Go to the next stage, and get a Mushroom. (Yes, there will be a Mushroom instead of a Fire Flower.) When you touch the Mushroom, you will shrink. Then get a Fire Flower, and you’ll have Fire Power as small Mario. (Note: after you do the Bowser/Axe trick, enemies that touch you will be able to kill you when you are Big Mario. When they touch you while you are small Mario after getting the Mushroom or Fire Flower, you will turn back into Big Mario.)

        • Timer Underflow Glitch

This glitch only works in the castle levels where you fight Bowser at the end – for example, World 1-4, 2-4, 3-4, and so on. It is best to defeat Bowser with Fire Mario or Fire Luigi beforehand, as you must wait out most of the timer to execute this glitch. At the end of the castle levels, there is an axe which you must touch to end the level. If you time your jump correctly (a full jump as the timer goes from 002 to 001 often works) and land on the axe while the timer reads “000”, you’ll continue as normal to the usual sequence at the end of the castle. However, your timer bonus (50 points per second remaining) will be calculated as if you had 999 seconds, not zero, left on the clock. This allows for an easy 49,950 point boost! Note that this glitch, if executed on levels using a flagpole, will prevent you from earning the bonus in that level.

        • Unlimited 1-Ups

Get to world 3-1, and become Super Mario. At the end of the level, by the staircase before the end flag, you will see two turtles coming down the stairs. Jumping over the first one and then jumping on the second one should cause it to hit the star and bounce back. From here, jump on it and keep yourself off the ground for unlimited 1-ups.

        • Level Warp

To warp to Worlds 2, 3,or 4 during World 1-2, go to the end where the 2 platforms are rising, get on the first platform, and use it to jump onto the highest structure in the middle, then jump on the next rising platform, but this time, when it reaches the top, jump onto the TOP of the level. Walk foward and drop down the small jump, and you can now warp to Worlds 2, 3, or 4 by going down the desired tube, and pressing down.

61

        • Level Warp to World 6,7 or 8

To warp to World 6,7 or 8 during World 4-2, go to the place where three blocks are can be seen (where a pipe can also be seen). Jump below the third block where you can reveal a secret block but be careful on jumping below the 1st block because you can’t break it thus going to the secret warp world unless you are a small Mario. Then step on to it and break the 2nd and the 3rd block. After you have done this, go down, then jump again below the second block now (it should have been broken now). The position of the two revealed blocks must be a stair from right to left. Anyway, step on to the 2nd block then braek the 1st block and there you can see the vine going up. Climb until you reach the day light again. Get some coins if you wish and you can now see three pipes like in the secret warp Worlds 2,3 and 4. Go down your desired pipe.

        • The Fireworks Secret

This is a pretty commonly known secret. If you touch the flagpole of any level with either 1, 3, or 6 seconds left on the ones place of the timer, you will get that amount of fireworks. For example, if you touch the flagpole with 126 seconds left on the time, you will get six fireworks!

Method 2:
This is yet another way to jump in midair. Stand on the ground while you have 3 or 4 life units and let an enemy run right into you. You’ll lose a life unit, but you’ll be able to jump in mid-air.

        • Flying Logs

This is most easily performed in World 1-1. Grab a POW block, and carry it to the set of logs. Wait for a log to bog over the waterfall, then throw the POW block so that it hits solid ground. For some odd reason, this will cause the log to fly high into the air. Strange, eh?

Super Mario Bros. 3

Glitches

        • Avoid Damage From Bowser

When fighting Bowser in the final level of the game, his lower half will not do damage to you. That means you can avoid damage from his ground-pound attack by ducking if you have obtained a power-up at some point, or, if Small Mario, you can walk under him and through him without sustaining damage!

        • Beat Fortress via N-Spade

In the game, you need to wait until the N-Spade card game – which appears with every 80,000 points you earn – spawns and moves to the spot of a fortress on the overworld map. If you go there now and play it, the fortress will as if you had beaten it afterwards, being collapsed and unplayable. Note, however, that the bridges and locks affected by defeating the fortress normally will still not unlock or reappear, so only do this when these things are not required.

        • Infinite Lives Glitch

In World 3-4, about halfway through the level, you’ll slide down a long hill to get on another long hill which has some Koopas on it. Take one of their shells further to the right. As the Lakitu appears above, return back to the left. There are two ? Blocks, with a pipe and some bricks between them and wood blocks on the ground. Let the Koopa shell begin bouncing between the wooden blocks and on-screen. The Lakitu’s Spinies will almost always launch or crawl down to be killed by the shell; the shell will subsequently rack up more points and lives as time goes on and more Spinies are added.

        • Quicker 1-Ups

In this game, when you normally jump on enemies in sequence without touching the ground, the points you earn will increase from 100, to 200, to 400, to 800, to 1,000, netting a 1-Up on the sixth sequential jump and all those after. However, if your fifth (the one after 800 points) jump lands on either a Lakitu or Boomerang Bro., you’ll begin getting 1-Ups right then! This glitch was fixed in Super Mario All-Stars.

        • Skip World 7-1

At the start of World 7-1, there is a doorway you’re meant to go through. Instead of doing that, run at it and jump at its top-right corner. If done with ample acceleration (and sometimes crouching just before jumping – that can help) you can glitch into the wall and skip the majority of the level.

10

        • White Block Invulnerability Glitch

Whenever you find a white block (such as the one in 1-3 that leads to the Whistle), stand on it and hold Down until you go through it. Then enter a pipe. In most cases, once on the other side, you’ll be unable to be hurt by enemies for the remainder of the level (although sometimes also invisible).

10

        • World 3-Fortress Door Glitch

In World 3’s first fortress (just after 3-3), there are several doors you’re meant to go through in the level, guessing which is the correct one. If you enter a door and it’s wrong, you can immediately press Up before falling to go back through the door. Further, doing this on the third and fourth doors will warp you, instead of to the gray pipe like the other doors, straight to the boss room.

        • Fight Bowser With No Fireballs

In Bowsers castle at the end of the game, it is possible to make it so he DOES NOT SPIT FIRE AT YOU. This trick is easy and only requires getting to world 8 with a P-wing. First off, use your P-wing on the map before entering the Final Castle. YOU MUST GET TO BOWSER INTACT. If you get to the Bowser fight room and the Bricks that he smashes through are not flush with the rest of the floor, then you are in the wrong room. Now, when you reach Bowsers room, FLY straight up and to the left. You will be able to walk on a wall above the screen. Drop down on the other side. You will be in another room to Fight Bowser in. When you drop, you will be on a door that opens to the princess. Ignore this room and DO NOT GO TOO FAR TO THE LEFT. If you do, you will have to fight Bowser and he will still have his Fire Balls. Fly back over the wall to the first room you were in and start the Bowser fight. He will still throw his head back and make the sound of spitting fire, but nothing will come out. 😉

        • Infinite 1-Ups

Get to World 1-2 as Raccoon Mario, with the tail. Climb the hill at the beginning and jump over the horizontal pipe. Stand there for a bit and a whole bunch of Goombas will start walking out of the pipe. Wait for 2-3 of them to come out of the pipe, then jump ontop of one and HOLD A to fly high into the air. Now that you are in the air, use your tail to slowly glide down from the air. On you landing, be sure to land on a second Goomba. Repeat this process for as long as you can. Eventually, the points you get for hitting each Goomba will turn into extra lives. This can be done for as long as you desire to do so.

This can also be done in 2-Fortress, and 7-5, but it is most notably done in 1-2.

        • Acceleration Glitch

Note that this glitch requires the use of a NES controller that allows Left and Right on the D-Pad to be pressed at the same time. By pressing Left and Right at the same time, there is a glitch in the game’s programming which allows Link to move with much higher velocity than normal, so high such that he can often enter and go through walls. You can alter your speed and direction by changing your facing or tapping Left or Right on the D-Pad while the other is held.

        • Avoid Forced Battle Scenes

To avoid forced battles (battles by stepping on a certain tile on the field) simply wait in front of it until monsters appear and when one steps on the tile, move onto the tile and you’ll go into a battle scene from the monster, not the tile. Most monster battle scenes are much easier than the tile’s. Extremely useful when going to the Great Palace.

        • Warp Hole

In some castles and action screens it is possible to jump higher than the stats at the top of the screen. If the spell Fairy is used when Link is above the stats and you try to move to a side, he will fall through a warp hole. In the action screens Link will simply reappear on the same action screen. While, in the castles, he will end up on top of or in another room, on top of the castle entrance, or in an elevator below the castles entrance and stuck. If he gets stuck below the castle, you will need to reset the game. Also, the spell Jump can help with this glitch.

Secrets

        • Earn quick experience for new character

To quickly earn more experience for a new character, first have a character who is far along in the game but hasn’t done all the palaces yet. Have this character beat a palace and go to the place to insert the gem.

When you insert the gem and the experience points start to total up, pause and do the Quick Save. Then, load your new character. All of the experience points which would’ve gone to the character you beat the palace with will now go to your new character.

        • No keys

If you come to a locked door and hove no key you can simply use the Fairy spell and fly right throuogh the keyhole. And sometimes if you have enough magic you can make it through the whole palace just using this trick.

Make sure you have two controllers in. Now on controller 1 pause the game, on controller 2 press up and A at the same time. You will be taken to a menu where you can save or continue.
